Fraser Ross THUNDERHEAD Album Release

Fraser Ross THUNDERHEAD Album Release

OGELMORN UPSTAIRS

‘New Zealand’s best kept musical secret’
— Capital Times

‘His music, which has traditional folk roots, has a wonderful way of breaking free from genre’
— The Wireless

‘Like a Kiwi Billy Connolly’
— The View, Scotland

Celebrating the release of his new record THUNDERHEAD, Fraser Ross is performing 'one show for each island.' Weaving folk, indie and soft-rock, the Ōtautahi-based artist has achieved a masterful collection of perfectly curated songs. The journey of THUNDERHEAD is as universal as it is personal to the artist, who wrote it as a documentary of self-discovery and forgiveness through his travels throughout America. Named after Thunderhead Artist’s Refuge in Montana, Fraser says that his experience at the artist camp was one of recovery and redirecting: “It was the physical and metaphorical place I turned around and stopped running away from the guilt of leaving.”

Fraser’s quirky sense of humour paints beautiful imagery for moving on with singles from this collection like ‘Janice, In the Dairy’, ‘Thunderhead’ and ‘Cards’ connecting the record like carriages of a train, taking listeners on an enjoyable journey of infectious and heartfelt music.

He has travelled the world with music, supporting Phoenix Foundation, Nathan Haines, and Nadia Reid. His EPs, AND BIRDS DO SING (2009) and TO PLACES (2012) established him as a serious talent and a brilliant, loud-shirted presence within the New Zealand underground. Numerous shows, time in Scotland, and two Albums - MONGRELS (2015) and LIFE IS MAGIC, WHERE IS MY RABBIT? (2018) - later, he has built a dedicated following in both the UK and New Zealand. Dubbed a Kiwi Billy Connolly for his tongue-in-cheek stage presence, he'll mix a light-hearted quip with a lonesome tune no problem. With his exciting new contribution to the Aotearoa music landscape, THUNDERHEAD is yet another reason to celebrate the talent that is Fraser Ross.

Aotearoa Digital Arts Network Performance Evening

Aotearoa Digital Arts Network Performance Evening

A program of co-performed and delegated works across music, movement, theatre and performance poetry. Featuring works from artists: Josh Bailey, Lisa Samuels, and Emele Ugavule

Josh Bailey’s work SID Code experiments with live visuals and audio generated from a Commodore 64 computer under the control of dynamically generated machine code. The work not only uses machine learning to generate new performances but automatically credits the influence of composers, and extends the approach to other means of music composition, production and instrumentality.

Poet Lisa Samuels considers language to be already artificial intelligence and its relational tethers with us to be poly-reflexive. For her, language is a being with rights to be in all its potential. Language can thrive with expansive attention to its intake-output arrays, including to its other-than-semantic performance registers in simultaneities of sound. Her performance, Lingual Acoustic Interbody, will weave motion sensitive acoustic technology with the spoken voice.

Tokelauan Fijian storyteller Emele Ugavule presents an excerpt from her recent theatre work Toe fai! (meaning ‘Do it again’ in Gagana Tokelau) commissioned by Arts House (Naarm/Melbourne, Australia) for the Biennial Live Event of the Everyday Digital. Toe Fai! looks at the ways our memories betray us and imagines a future where our descendants cannot visualise their inheritance. Through verbatim storytelling and monologue, Emele Ugavule weaves together a narrative that asks ‘what are the implications of AI technology enabling procedural memory to dissolve for Tokelauan peoples?’ and ‘How do Tokelau peoples locate themselves without procedural memory?’ bringing together stories across generations, choreographed by movement artist Amy Zhang and original music by Jane Stark.

Now Estère returns to Aotearoa to share her new, dynamic, rhythm-focussed performance, creating a mesmerising summer-vibe show for her fans across the motu.

Phoebe Rings - Asurai Single Show

tickets - https://www.undertheradar.co.nz/gig/87765/Phoebe-Rings-Aseurai-Single-Release.utr

Tāmaki Makaurau’s favourite dream pop quartet Phoebe Rings play two special shows to celebrate the release of 아스라이 (Aseurai), their first single since 2021's debut EP.

Aseurai became a live staple of Phoebe Rings shows following the release of their debut EP in 2021. Recorded between Jonathan Pearce's studio on Karangahape Road and the band's various home studios, it features strings by Charmian Keay and Kathleen Tomacruz, and is mixed by Jeremy Toy. Aseurai serves as a type of overture of things to come from Phoebe Rings, melding chamber and dream pop influences with zingy funk synthesizers and disco octave hopping bassline.

In Tāmaki Makaurau, Phoebe Rings will be joined in Te Whanganui-a-Tara by Dateline.

Battle of the Breweries - Round 3
Dec

Battle of the Breweries - Round 3

First held in 2021 at the Hop garden the Battle of the breweries involved several breweries such as Parrotdog, Boneface, Deep creek and Tuatara. It was an event not to be missed each time, with some of the brewery teams attending the event offering all of you beer geeks the opportunity to have a chat about what’s brewing in the background. The battle of the breweries was a fun way to get everyone together in a relax and playful environment. So we thought it was time to do it again!

Three battles down, one more to go before the semi-final. Who is going to join Abandoned Brewery, Double Vision brewing and Rhyme x Reasons brewery.

This time, we’re travelling to the beautiful Kapiti coast with Duncan’s brewing company and North End brewing.

Duncan’s brewing company is close to our heart at Smoked & Pickled, in 2021 we started our adventure at the front of the brewery on Sheffield Street, Paraparaumu. Duncan’s always delivers the most creative brews (who doesn’t like their ice cream sours?) always pushing the boundaries between beers and the world of international alcoholic beverage. Their core range is also a delight, ask Craig, our chef, who is addicted to their ‘Yum Yum’ Yuzu lager.

On the other hand, North End brewing loves the old-world style beers, they know how to master the traditional/ancestral brewing method with flair. Their seasonal beers are always surprising and delicious with distinct personality. Once again, you cannot pass by their core range, Alice at Smoked & Pickled has been an unconditional fan of ‘Become the Ocean’ Gose.

Which one will be your favourite? Will you be able to guess what brewery is behind those delectable brews?
Each brewery will put forward 2 different styles of beers for you to blind test.
Score cards will be handed to you to score your tasting and the winner will be announced the day after on our social media. The winning brewery will go to the semi finale next year.
Some epic merch will also be up for grabs! Keep an eye on the back of your score card!
Kicking off at 5pm on the December the 7th at Vogelmorn Bowling Club - this is another battle you won't want to miss!
Tasty kai & local drinks will be available from Smoked and Pickled and UPSTAIRS from 3pm - 10pm.

Vogelmorn Bowling Club is not a wheelchair accessible space.
