DIRT (Disaster Innovation Research and Teaching) is your community resilience initiative, based at Vogelmorn (93 Mornington Road). Together, we can make our neighbourhood become better prepared for a significant earthquake, extreme weather, or other disaster scenario.
The November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake was 7.8 in magnitude and seriously damaged rail line and roads, disrupting much of the freight flowing between the North and South Islands.
Cécile L’Hermitte from the University of Waikato studied and will talk about the impact and response to this and other disrupting events. She has vital insights into what we should think about and work to prepare for locally.
We also have Chris Berthelsen who works with the Japanese Science and Technology Agency's Moonshot Goal 8, an ambitious
project looking to reduce the extreme weather being pushed by climate change.
Come and learn in a relaxed and fun way to help make yourself and our community better prepared to handle disruptive events.
